Fill, not fit, for feeds
Social platforms crop what does not match their shape, and they do it without asking. Fill mode makes that decision on your machine instead: your image is scaled to cover the target box exactly and the overflow is cropped where you choose, using the focal point control.
Fit mode is the alternative when nothing can be lost — an infographic, a screenshot with text at the edges. The result is letterboxed, so pair it with a background colour that matches your feed rather than leaving white bars.
Upload larger than the display size
Platforms re-encode almost everything you upload. Sending a file that is already at the display size means your image is compressed twice at the smallest possible dimensions, which is where visible artefacts come from. Uploading at the recommended pixel dimensions — not below them — gives the platform's encoder more to work with.
That is also why heavy pre-compression is counterproductive here. Quality 85 to 90 is a reasonable upload target even though the platform will compress it again.
Specifications change
Every dimension on this page comes from a single preset file with a date attached to each entry, so corrections are one edit rather than a hunt through the site. Platforms adjust their layouts regularly; treat these as a good starting point and check anything business-critical against the platform's own current guidance.
Questions
- What size works everywhere?
- Nothing works everywhere, but 1080 × 1350 covers portrait feeds and 1080 × 1920 covers every full-screen story format. A square 1080 × 1080 is the most broadly acceptable single size.
- Why do my uploads look soft?
- Usually double compression: an image already reduced and heavily compressed, then re-encoded by the platform. Upload at the recommended dimensions with quality around 85 and let the platform do its own reduction.
- Can I make several sizes from one batch?
- Yes. Process with one preset, download, then apply the next preset and process again — the originals stay loaded, so nothing needs re-importing.
