DPI is a relationship, not a property
A digital image has pixels. It does not, in any meaningful sense, have a physical size until you decide how densely to print those pixels. DPI is the number that connects the two: 300 dots per inch across 1800 pixels gives you six inches of paper. Change the DPI and the same file prints at a different size — nothing about the image data has changed.
This is why “set it to 300 DPI” is not a fix for a low-resolution photo. If a 600-pixel-wide image is tagged as 300 DPI, it is simply a two-inch print. The tag describes intent; the pixels determine what is possible.
What this tool does and does not do
Entering 8 × 10 inches at 300 DPI here resizes your images to 2400 × 3000 pixels, which is exactly what an 8 × 10 print at that density requires. What it cannot do is write a density value into the exported file, because browser canvases have no mechanism for it. In practice this rarely matters: print shops and layout software work from pixel dimensions and the size you specify in the order or the document.

Bleed and cropping
Print sizes and camera ratios rarely match. A standard camera frame is 3:2, which fits a 4 × 6 print exactly and does not fit 5 × 7 or 8 × 10 at all — those require cropping. Fill mode does that crop predictably across a batch, with the focal point deciding what is kept. If a lab asks for bleed, add a few percent of padding so the trim does not cut into your subject.
Questions
- How many pixels do I need for a 4 × 6 print?
- 1200 × 1800 pixels at 300 DPI. At 150 DPI you would need 600 × 900, which is acceptable for a print viewed at arm's length but noticeably softer up close.
- Does this tool set the DPI value inside the file?
- No, and that is worth being clear about. A browser canvas cannot write density metadata, so DPI is used here to calculate the pixel dimensions you need. Your printer or layout software sets the final print size from those pixels.
- Is 300 DPI always necessary?
- For photographic prints held in the hand, yes, it is the usual standard. Posters viewed from a metre away are fine at 150 DPI, and billboards are often produced at far less, because viewing distance is what actually determines perceived sharpness.
- What if my photo does not have enough pixels?
- Print it smaller, or accept a lower DPI. Enlarging cannot restore detail that was never captured, and an upscaled file will print soft no matter which tool produced it.
