The zoom threshold
Amazon enables its zoom viewer when the longest side is large enough — 1600 pixels is the usual threshold, and 2000 × 2000 clears it comfortably while staying square. Listings without zoom lose a meaningful amount of buyer confidence, so this is worth getting right across the whole catalogue rather than image by image.
The stated minimum is 1000 pixels on the longest side. Meeting the minimum and missing the zoom threshold is the common mistake.
White backgrounds and framing
Main images are expected to sit on a pure white background with the product filling most of the frame. Pad mode standardises the canvas to a white square; it does not cut a subject out of a busy background, which needs to happen in your photography or editing beforehand.
Once your shots are on white, padding to square keeps every product at a consistent scale in search results, which is what makes a catalogue look coherent.
Working through a catalogue
Import an entire product folder, pad to 2000 × 2000, rename with a pattern based on the ASIN or SKU plus a padded sequence, and export as a ZIP. That single pass produces upload-ready files with predictable names, which matters when a bulk upload template references them.
Secondary images do the selling
The main image has to be a product on white, which makes it the least persuasive image in the listing. Everything that actually answers a buyer’s question — scale against a familiar object, the material up close, the item in use, what arrives in the box — belongs in the secondary slots, where lifestyle backgrounds and text overlays are permitted.
Those images benefit from the same treatment as the main one: identical dimensions, identical export settings, names that state which product and which angle. A gallery where every frame is the same size and scale looks considered, and it lets a buyer compare shots without the layout shifting under them.
Questions
- What size do Amazon product images need to be?
- At least 1000 pixels on the longest side; 2000 × 2000 is the practical target because it enables zoom.
- Does this remove the background from my photos?
- No. Pad mode adds a white canvas around the image. Removing an existing background is a separate editing job.
- Which format should I upload?
- JPEG is the safe choice for photographic product images at quality 85 to 90.
